WHY PARENTS SELECT BABY GENDER

from: LILY WOODS

There are many reasons parents would prefer to choose the gender of their next baby. With the increase in living expenses, parents cannot afford many children as compared to the olden days. Therefore, parents wish to choose the gender of their next child, if possible.

Some families already have older children of the same gender, so it became natural to wish for the opposite gender in the next pregnancy. Some parents already had a girl and wish for a boy to complete the family. There are parents who hope to have a second girl so that they can pass down the clothes and toys. Some parents wish for a girl for easier upbringing. While some may wish for boy, to help out and inherit their family business. There is no denial that in many societies, the male is still the preferred dominance gender.

There are many more reasons why parents would like to choose their baby gender. Health is of the reason, especially if there is a known hereditary disease running down the family. There are 350 known diseases which the X chromosomes carry and only affects the male babies. Examples are such as hemophilia, muscular dystrophy and X-linked hydrocephalus. In such cases, it is practical for gender selection as the disorders may cause discomfort for both the parents and the child.

Choosing the gender of the babies has raised many controversy and debate over the need of doing so. In the United Kingdom, gender selection has been banned for non-medical reasons. Only families with strong medical proof are allowed for the procedures. There have been talks that if gender selection is allowed, designer babies will follow, allowing parents to choose the color of the eye, hair and other features.

Although controversial, parents who still wishes for certain gender resolved to other methods. There are many other natural methods with scientific backings.
